KitKat Upgrade Coming to Google Glass

So, you might be sitting there wondering why Google hasn’t released the XE14 update yet. Well, it’s not going to be coming out this month, but Google has a good reason why they aren’t going to release it. According to a post published by Teresa Zazenski (A Google Glass Guide), Google Glass™  is getting an upgrade from Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.3) to KitKat (Android 4.4) and it’s going to take a bit of time.

Quote from Teresa Zazenski

The pace isn’t changing and we’re still committed to regular updates for Glass – even if they’re not monthly anymore, because bigger updates just take more time. In fact, we’re working to move Glass from Ice Cream Sandwich to Kit Kat to make the Glass experience smoother and just plain better. This change will make it easier for us to bring you more useful updates and it’s something we’re really excited about. Developers, we know you’re gonna be excited, too. But it’s also something that we don’t want to send to you all until it’s just right.

While it does suck that monthly updates are most likely not going to be a thing anymore, and we will have to wait a bit for XE14 – the benefits from the upgrade from KitKat for the developers and users are well worth the wait. Users will experience better battery life, better security and better overall performance. And, from what I understand KitKat has a better, more rich API so I’m pretty sure the developers are going to enjoy that.

Even though the monthly update schedule might be a thing of the past, the Google Glass team still plans to deliver regular updates, which is really all that matters. While the Google Glass community really did love the monthly updates, I’m sure it put the Google Glass development team in a bit of a pickle when it came to demand. At least with this little announcement, they can relax a little bit, not worry too much, and concentrate a little better at perfecting Google Glass and not rushing things.

In the meantime, keep on exploring. There are plenty of apps and other stuff that you can check out while you impatiently wait for this update. Take a peek at UniSpeech, it’s pretty darn awesome.

Developers out there. Please feel more than welcome to inform us normal users how this update will affect / help you when it comes to making apps. What’s the good, what’s the bad?
