Microsoft Is Looking to Join the Smart Glasses Party

Microsoft smart glasses have been a joke among Explorers and other smart glasses owners for a long time now, but it seems like Microsoft might actually be creating its own pair of augmented reality smart glasses.

Back in June 2012, the Xbox One’s roadmap was leaked online and inside that roadmap there was a mention of a device called “Kinect Shades”. This was thought to be the codename for the Microsoft smart glasses, but it was never confirmed and as you can imagine a lot of questions were raised.

Microsoft Smart Glasses

Most recently in August 2013, a Microsoft patent outlining the device was spotted online and it detailed how it could be used to augment multiplayer games. The device would be able to recognize and analyze voice data and make use of eye tracking information while displaying HUD information in front of the wearer.

Well now, according to TechCrunch, Microsoft is applying for over 80 VR patents and Microsoft has also bought $150 million worth of assets from the wearable company Osterhout Design Group. Microsoft did not acquire the company like Facebook acquired Oculus, but it’s safe to assume that Microsoft is going to be using all the company’s knowledge to help perfect its augmented reality glasses / smart glasses.

While this news is definitely interesting, it’s far from shocking. Microsoft’s main competitor Sony, at least when it comes to consoles, recently revealed its Project Morpheus VR headset at GDC 2014. It’s not coincidental that this story is coming out shortly after that reveal.

Every tech company seems to be getting in the wearable technology game, so it makes sense that Microsoft would get its stuff together and get it the wearable tech game as well, even if it is just to keep up with companies like Sony.

More and more news is going to be coming out in the next few months about Microsoft building its own pair of augmented reality glasses / smart glasses. We can safely say that the war between Sony and Microsoft isn’t going to be about just consoles much longer, and that the war is slowly moving towards smart glasses. Are you ready for the fight?

Do you have anything to add to this story? What are your thoughts on this? Are you excited?
