Oakley Airwave – Smart Snow Goggles

One might assume that smart glasses are just for geeks who want to have the latest technology, but they’re not. Really, there is a pair of smart glasses for everyone – geeks, runners, cyclists, surgeons, and even snowboarders.

Oakley Airwave smart goggles are like a snowboarder’s dream. Oakley has taken their well-known snow goggles and integrated all the technology that you can find in a good ole pair of smart glasses. The Smart Goggles have a heads-up display, a remote control, a GPS, Bluetooth, an accelerometer, a barometer and gyro sensors.

On the bottom right hand side of the goggles there is a heads-up display that is comparable to viewing a 14-inch screen from five feet away. The device is not standalone and connects to a smart phone. Once the goggles are connected to a smart phone the wearer can view a whole assortment of things including how fast they are going down a hill, performance stats, airtime from jumps, navigation maps, music, text messages and even Facebook updates.

While Oakley has integrated all this technology into a pair of Goggles, they made sure not to sacrifice comfort and made sure to keep all the features that snow sports participants love. The smart goggles come with dual vented lenses with F3 anti-fog technology, and a plutonite lens that filters out 100% of UVA, UVB, UVC, and harmful blue light. Besides coming with awesome protective lenses, the goggles also have a feature called “Switchlock” which allows the wearer to change lenses quickly and hassle-free. So, if the wearer doesn’t like the lenses that the goggles come with, then they can put in their favorite ones or buy some new lenses.

I was unable to find an SDK or developer section, so I assume that these glasses are not open for public app development. With that said, I’m sure Oakley plans to keep these bad boys up-to-date and will release more features for them in the future. The Oakley Airwave smart goggles are definitely a cool piece of tech that I’m sure many snowboarders and skiers will enjoy. They are pretty sexy so I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a few people just randomly walking down the street wearing them.
