Hardware Comparison: Vuzix M100 vs Recon Jet

The Vuzix M100 and Recon Jet looks very similar. When the Vuzix M100 is attached to a pair of safety glasses, you can barely tell the difference between the two from a distance. With that being said, the Vuzix M100 and Recon Jet has their slight differences. The biggest difference between the two devices is the markets they are targeting. The Vuzix M100 is marketed more towards workers and enterprise. The Recon Jet on the other hand is marketed towards sports people who want to know how they are performing during their training.

While both of these pairs of smart glasses are targeting different markets, they can technically be used for all different types of things. Both pairs of smart glasses have SDKs and run Android, so developers can make apps and design things outside of these devices targeted uses. The Vuzix M100 with the right apps can be used for sports, and the Recon Jet with the right apps can be used for enterprise related things.

Recon Jet

So, how do these two devices compare when it comes to hardware? Well, we’re going to be figuring that out in this post. Below, you will find a hardware comparison of the M100 and Recon Jet.

CPU

Vuzix M100Recon Jet
CPUTI OMAP 4460 1.2Ghz Dual Core1 GHz Dual-Core ARM Cortex-A9

The Vuzix M100 and Recon Jet both have dual-core arm processors. While both devices have arm processors, the one in the Vuzix M100 runs at a slightly higher clock speed. The Vuzix M100 processor runs at 1.2GHz while the one in the Recon Jet runs at 1GHz. Not a huge difference, but the CPU in the Vuzix M100 is better.

Memory / RAM

Vuzix M100Recon Jet
Memory1GB1GB

There’s not much to talk about when it comes to ram. Both devices are rocking 1 gigabyte of ram. So, there’s no difference between the two devices in this area.

Storage

Vuzix M100Recon Jet
Storage4GB internal memory. 32GB of additional memory with a MicroSD card.8GB flash

The Vuzix M100 is pretty awesome when it comes to storage space. By default, the Vuzix M100 has a measly 4GBs of storage space, but the storage space can be expanded by 32 gigabytes with a MicroSD card. That’s a lot of space.

The Recon Jet comes with a nice amount of space. By default, it has 8GBs of storage space available. While the Recon Jet comes with more storage space by default, the Recon Jet’s storage space can’t be expanded with a MicroSD card.

So, technically when it comes to storage space the Recon Jet is better out-of-the-box. But, overall the Vuzix M100 is better if you throw a MicroSD card in it.

Battery

Vuzix M100Recon Jet
Battery550mAh rechargeable internal battery, Up to 6 hours of usage.Interchangeable battery, lasts up to 4-6 hours.

The Vuzix M100 has a 550mAh internal battery that lasts up to six hours, depending on how much you use the device. Unfortunately, Recon Instruments doesn’t list many details about the battery inside of the Recon Jet. The battery inside of the Recon Jet is supposed to last around 4-6 hours with a single charge. So, in terms of the battery life it is similar to the Vuzix M100. With that being Said, Recon Jet is pretty superior when it comes to the battery.

The reason I say the Recon Jet is superior to the Vuzix M100 when it comes to the batteries is because the Recon Jet’s battery is interchangable. Meaning, someone can carry around multiple batteries and change them when their device runs out of juice. That’s a pretty awesome feature and that’s why I say the Recon Jet is superior to the Vuzix M100 in this area.

Display

The displays on these two devices are practically the same. Both devices are rocking 16:9, full-color displays that have a resolution of 428×240. Both devices’ displays are placed on the lower right hand side. The only difference between the two devices when it comes to the displays is that the Recon Jet has a few software-based power-saving features, but that’s about it.

Overall, both displays are pretty nice and are pretty much the same.

Camera

Vuzix M100Recon Jet
Camera5MP Photos, 1080p Videos.5MP Photos, 720p Videos.

Both devices’ cameras are pretty nice. With that being said, the camera on the Vuzix M100 is better. The Recon Jet is only capable of capturing 720p video while the Vuzix M100 is capable of capturing 1080p video.

Sensors

Sensors3 DOF gesture engine (L/R,U/D,N/F), Ambient light, GPS, Proximity, 3-degree of freedom head tracking, 3 axis gyro, 3 axis accelerometer, and 3 axis mag/integrated compass.3D accelerometer, 3D gyroscope, 3D magnetometer, Altimeter & barometer, ambient temperature sensor, and optical touch sensor.

Both devices are packed with sensors. The Vuzix M100 and Recon Jet actually share a good portion of the same sensors. With that being said, the Vuzix M100 has a gesture engine and a few other sensors that the Recon Jet does not.

I can’t really declare that one device is better than another in this section. But, overall the Vuzix M100 does have more sensors.

Connectivity

Vuzix M100Recon Jet
ConnectivityWifi and bluetooth.Wifi, bluetooth, Apple Mfi, and ANT+

The Vuzix M100 and Recon Jet can both connect to Wifi and bluetooth. The Recon Jet has the added benefits of also being compatible with Apple Mfi and ANT+. So, besides bluetooth accessories, the Recon Jet can connect to heart rate monitors and things of that sort.

So, when it comes to connectivity options the Recon Jet is better than the Vuzix M100.

Sound

Vuzix M100Recon Jet
SoundEar speaker and a noise canceling microphone.Integrated speaker and microphone.

The Vuzix M100 and Recon Jet are on a pretty even playing field here. Both devices have integrated ear speakers and built-in microphones. The only difference I can find between the two devices in this area is that the Vuzix M100’s microphone has noise canceling while the Recon Jet’s microphone does not. Well, at least noise canceling isn’t stated on the Recon Instruments’ specifications page.

Controls

Vuzix M100Recon Jet
Controls4 control buttons, remote control app, voice navigation and gestures.Touchpad, gestures (with Myo Band), and voice.

Both devices can be controlled via different methods. The Vuzix M100 can be controlled using buttons, an app, voice, and gestures. Recon Jet can be controlled via a touchpad on the side, gestures (with the help of a Myo Band) and by voice.

I can’t really declare that one device is better than the other when it comes to controls, because it’s all down to preference. With that being said, the Vuzix M100 offers one more method of control than the Recon Jet.

Conclusion

So, that’s a hardware comparison of the Vuzix M100 and Recon Jet. Both devices are pretty similar, but they are superior in their own areas. For example, the Vuzix M100 has more storage space with an SD card than the Recon Jet. But, the Recon Jet has a better battery system than the Vuzix M100.

At the end of the day, both devices are great. Really, the only major difference between the two is the audience they were designed for. Recon Jet is for sports people and the Vuzix M100 is for the average worker. With that being said, each device can be changed to suite different needs if put in the hands of the right developer.
