How Smart Glasses Can Be Used in Education

Smart glasses aren’t something that only nerds and geeks can find useful. People in all walks of life can find smart glasses extremely useful. This includes teachers.

Smart glasses can be incredibly useful in the classroom. Not only can they help teachers perform certain tasks, but they can also help the students. Students and teachers alike can benefit from smart glasses in the classroom. One could even say that smart glasses can help teachers build closer working relationships with students.

Classroom

In this post, I’m going to go over some of the ways that a teacher can use smart glasses in the classroom. Obviously, smart glasses are quite expensive at the moment and not all teachers can get smart glasses or will be able to benefit from smart glasses. Still, these are some of the ways smart glasses can be used in the classroom. Enjoy!

Video Guides

Most smart glasses come with a camera that can be used to record point-of-view videos. These types of videos are perfect for demonstrating different things and creating guides. Any teacher could use the camera on a pair of smart glasses to record videos that demonstrate the different steps it takes to complete a project or even a science experiment. Overall, smart glasses are pretty handy for creating video guides.

Streaming Lessons

Like I said above, most smart glasses come with a camera. These cameras can not only be used to record different things, but they can also be used to stream video.

Teachers are always going to have the occasional student who needs to stay home for whatever reason. Instead of these students missing out on everything, a teacher could use the smart glasses to record or stream video to these students so they aren’t completely clueless about what’s been happening while they’ve been away. Video streams from smart glasses can also be used to offer one-on-one help to people who need it, without either party having to leave their comfort zone.

Teacher Evaluations

Teacher evaluations are pretty awkward for everyone involved. You got an observer sitting in the classroom, which not only slightly distracts students, but it also puts the teacher under a bit of pressure. Instead of “disrupting” the classroom, people who need to see what a teacher is up to can just have a teacher wear a pair of smart glasses and can observe them remotely via the smart glasses. This way there’s no person awkwardly sitting in the corner of the room, no students being distracted, and the teacher can do their job without worrying about performing well in front of the observer.

SMS Questions

Every class has shy students who are scared to raise their hand and to ask questions. Well, with a pair of smart glasses a teacher can read text messages pretty easily and read them without reaching into their pockets every few minutes. So, if a teacher wanted to, he or she could have students text them questions that they are too shy to ask openly. The teacher could then view the messages on a pair of smart glasses and address the questions with the whole class. This way no student is neglected and every student leaves the classroom knowing what they need to know.

Answering Questions

Teachers don’t know everything. It’s impossible for anyone to know everything. Still, with a pair of smart glasses a teacher can know a lot more.

A decent chunk of teachers when asked a question they don’t know the answer to will not attempt to find the answer. They’ll just kind of say “I don’t know” and will continue on with their lesson. No one can blame them for this either, because it’s kind of a task to stop in the middle of a lesson, go over to a computer, and try to find the answer to a question quickly.

Well, with a pair of smart glasses, a teacher can have a quick way to search for information and can at least attempt to find the answer to a question they don’t know the answer to. With the right application, a teacher could vocalize a question and have summaries of information or quick facts read to them aloud. This way students don’t feel completely neglected, and a teacher will have some information to give back to the student. With smart glasses, a teacher can do this without ever moving from the front of the class and without completely stopping a lesson.

Taking Notes

Even the cheapest, most underpowered pair of smart glasses is capable of taking notes with a proper app. With a good note taking application, a teacher can never again forget things that they might usually forget. If a teacher needs to remember to grade someones test, well they got the notes app. If a teacher needs to remember to collect a certain piece of homework, well they got the notes app. If a teacher needs to remember where to start a lesson, well they got the notes app.

A note taking app is infinitely useful, especially for teachers. With the ability to “write” down notes and read notes via voice commands, I don’t see many teachers not taking more notes. Overall, smart glasses can be incredibly useful for taking notes.

Conclusion

So, those are some of the ways that smart glasses can be used in education and to help teachers. A lot of the above is wishful thinking though, because applications will have to be developed and there aren’t many developers creating things for smart glasses right now. Also, smart glasses are quite expensive, so a lot of teachers or school districts will not be picking them up just yet. Still, once smart glasses are cheaper and once there are more developers out there working on smart glasses, then more teachers will probably be using them.
